March First, 2015: Second Sunday of Lent

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT ~ MARCH 1, 2015

Sunday Scripture Meditation: Genesis   22:1-2,9a,10-13,15-18;; Romans 8:31b-34; 5; Mark 9:2-10

God transfigured Jesus as a way of strengthening the disciples – and all of us as well. The Transfiguration is a promise for us. It reveals the glory that awaits each of us at the end of our lives — if we remain faithful to the Lord. We are all works in progress. So accept Jesus’ invitation. Follow Him and we will be changed.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   Printed with the permission of   The Word Among Us, 2015

Defending Our Religious Liberty #153

We are called to advocate for the most fundamental of human goods and rights, in particular, the right to life and the right not only to profess our faith, but to live it out. We are advocating for the freedom to “be Catholic,” to go about our lives serving the needs of our brothers and sisters, regardless of their race, creed, or religion, not because they are Catholic, but because we are Catholic.

If you haven’t done so already, please voice your opposition to the mandate by calling President Obama at the White House at 202-456-1111 or U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia Mathews Burwell at 202-205-5445. Let them know that the mandate is in violation of our First Amendment right to religious freedom.

PARISH RAFFLE: As mentioned last Fall, our Parish Finance Committee is sponsoring three raffles each year. The proceeds will be used to supplement our Parish Operating Budget. The next RAFFLE DRAWING takes place today, Marcb 1st in our Parish Hall, at 1:00pm. Raffle tickets are still available in the Church Vestibule, of you didn’t pick yours up yet. We ask for your cooperation in selling or buying the tickets. If you do not see an envelope with your name please take an envelope from the box marked “Extra Raffle Tickets”. May God continue to bless you for your dedication and support of our Parish!

Recupido, Jaclyn Rios, Pat Secchiaroli, Nancy Simmonds, Irene Sinanis, Claudia Steward, Andrea Vittoria and other parishioners who may be in a hospital, convalescent home or homebound at this time.

EVANGELIZATION CORNER

Lent is a time of transformation. As we gaze in the dark faith of prayer upon the glory of God revealed in Jesus Christ, we are transformed into His likeness. As we leave the work of prayer for the work of charity in our world we live in His likeness.

Faith and your Family – 40 Bags in 40 Days

We all have a lot of stuff. Too much stuff. Certainly, that stuff gets in the way of our relationship with GOD. We allow stuff to take up our time, our space, and our hearts. Challenge your family to fill “40 Bags in 40 Days.” This task – meant to be accomplished during the 40 days of Lent – asks everyone to get rid of stuff from one designated area of the home each day. Imagine how much simpler your life will be after such intense and long-term de-cluttering. Image how much more room you will have for GOD in your day, your home, and your heart.

The GUILD OF THE MOTHER OF JESUS Executive Board will meet on Wednesday, March 4th at 7:00pm in the School Meeting Room. Plans will be finalized for the March 11th membership meeting and “Mary’s Way of the Cross”, as well as the upcoming March 15th Easter Bake Sale and March 28th Covered Dish Supper. The membership meeting on March 11th begins in church at 6:30pm for “Mary’s Way of The Cross”. All parishioners are invited. A business meeting will follow in the parish hall and refreshments will be served. Plans will be finalized for the Easter Bake Sale and the Covered Dish Supper. Members are asked to bring a new item for the Small Raffle Table. New members are always welcome!

February 21st, 2015: First Sunday of Lent

THE FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT ~ FEBRUARY 22, 2015

Sunday Scripture Meditation: Genesis   9:8-15; 1 Peter 3:18-22; Mark 1:12-15

As we celebrate the first Sunday of Lent, let us remember that the culmination of these forty days is not Good Friday; it’s Easter! This Lent let’s keep our eyes on the prize: new life in Christ. It’s a life that begins right now, every time we receive or give love. It’s a life that will lead us to the final prize; eternal life with Jesus.

Defending Our Religious Liberty #152

Religious freedom has never been red or blue, left or right, Catholic or non-Catholic. It is – and – has always been American. FAITH AND YOUR FAMILY: Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent is a sign of repentance; the humility required to wear our ashes in public reminds us of our constant call to conversion. What will each member of your family do in the next 40 days to grow closer to God? Vow together as a family to make this Lent mean more than ever. Work together towards this goal, keeping your sacrifices and efforts in mind as you go about your days, praying for one another, and discussing the journey through the desert towards a glorious Easter. You might like to plant “forget-me-not” seeds on this day and watch them bloom by Easter as a lesson about God’s life-giving power and how his death brings new life. This particular flower also reminds us of Jesus’ words, “This is my body, broken for you, do this in remembrance of me.”

EVANGELIZATION CORNER

It is when we are hungry that we most need the Bread of life and not the banquet spread by temptation. It is when we are thirsty that we most need the cup of salvation and not the wine held out by sin. It is when we are weak that we most need the strength of Christ and not our own.

PRAYER CORNER: Please pray for the good health of Ted Bielen,, Judy Brammer, Jeanne Buynak, Frank Caruso, Carol Charney, DeFazio Family, Maryjoan Marus, Elaine Norko, Janet Onze, David Petreycik, Jo-Ann Petreycik, Charles Rader, Cynthia Recupido, T.J. February 15th, 2015- Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

THE SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ 2-15-2015

Sunday Scripture Meditation: Liviticus 13:1-12, 44-46; 1 Corinthians 10:31-11:1; Mark 1:40-45

In today’s Gospel reading there’s a man with leprosy living in exile. When Jesus heals him, he is set free from isolation. Then there’s Jesus, the center of a renewal movement in Galilee, who takes the man’s uncleanness upon Himself. This switch is a foreshadowing of the cross. Jesus became an outsider so that we could become insiders in His heavenly kingdom.                                                                                                                                                                           Printed with the permission of   The Word Among Us, 2015

FAITH AND YOUR FAMILY – Lenten Giving Jar

We know about the fasting and prayer we are called to for Lent. But what of the giving? Create a “Lenten Giving Jar” in your home. Spend an evening discussing the many ways you can offer random acts of kindness to others, such as “give a compliment,” “say hi to an old friend,”’ “carry someone’s heavy load,” “sit with someone who is alone.” Write each act on a slip of paper and put it in the jar (you will have to replenish it each week). As each family member leaves the house each day, they should take a slip of paper from the jar and perform that act of kindness without seeking recognition. At the end of the day, talk together about what happened, how it made the recipient feel and how it made the giver feel. Pray with one another that your kindnesses will be passed on throughout Lent and beyond.

February 8th, 2015: Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ 2-8-2015

Sunday Scripture Meditation: Job 7:1-4, 6-7; 1 Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23; Mark 1:29-39

The Gospels are filled with accounts of Jesus’ ability to heal the sick and deliver the troubled. Everywhere He went, people flocked to Him. People always pay attention to healings. They know how to see them for the signs they truly are. Let’s tell Jesus that we believe in His power to heal. Let’s ask Him to give us the gift of healing so that we can show the world that He is real.

EVANGELIZATION CORNER

Does Job’s lament in the first reading give voice to the desperation that brought the sick and the possessed to Jesus? The lament ends without hope, but the desperation of the sufferers held at least a thread of hope strong enough to draw them to the Savior who had healed their neighbor, Simon’s mother-in-law. The resurrection, which we remember every Sunday, grounds an even greater hope in the saving power of Christ.

We need ALTAR SERVERS, both youth and adults, male and female, for our Saturday 4:30pm and Sunday 11:00am Masses. Get more information from Mike Matis, 203-218-4933, or from our parish office, 203-375-5815.

Defending Our Religious Liberty #151

Religious freedom is a God-given right. It is protected in the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights of our U.S. Constitution, which dates back to December 15, 1791. The government should not be allowed to force people or groups to violate their most deeply held religious convictions.

The men of our HOLY NAME SOCIETY will have their next meeting on Thursday, FEBRUARY 12, 2015 at 6:00pm in the Parish Hall. Food will be served. All members are asked to attend. New members welcome!!
