September 28th 2014: 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time

TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ SEPTEMBER 28, 2014

Sunday Scripture Meditation: Ezekiel 18:25-28; Philippians 2:1-11; Matthew 21:28-32

We should not let modules in our lives control us. Taking our cue from Jesus, the “life in the Spirit” module is the ideal. Jesus was exalted at the right hand of God because He followed His Father in all things. Likewise, we will be exalted when we obey God’s commands and try our best to live in love. “Lord, help me to think and act like you.”                             Reprinted with permission of The Word Among Us, 2014

FAITH AND YOUR FAMIILY:

How to Make Sunday Holy

Sunday is the Lord’s Day, a special day, a day of celebration and of rest. But, we live in a world that operates 24/7 – what implications does our round-the-clock world have on our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being? Our Lord knows we need rest, and he has commanded us to rest. When we set aside time for God, we begin to see everything from a different perspective. Our lives no longer spin out of control, because we know in the depths of our being that God is in charge. We can let go of our worries and our own agendas. We can look forward to Sunday as a holy day because we begin to see that, ultimately, everything rests with God.

Religious Education

Today in our parish, we celebrate Catechetical Sunday. We honor those who share in the evangelizing and teaching mission of the Church through a special rite of commissioning and blessing. Here at Holy Name of Jesus the following Catechists and Junior Catechists were commissioned to share the faith of the Church with our families and their children.

Please note that our Ladies Guild will be collecting complete Rosaries from now on, since the gentleman who did the work on the broken rosaries is no longer available.

EVANGELIZATION CORNER

God never wearies of calling us back to Himself. His patient love for us exceeds all our willfulness and wandering, all our stubbornness and stupidity! The shortest of all psalms, psalm 117, captures vividly the promise of today’s readings.

Defending Our Religious Liberty #132

It is not only religious believers who suffer when religious liberty is trampled. The people served by religious individuals and institutions also suffer. If you haven’t done so already, please voice your opposition to the health care mandate by calling President Obama at the White House at 202-456-1111 or U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia Mathews Burwell at 202-205-5445. Let them know that the mandate is in violation of our First Amendment right to religious freedom.

Our Ladies Guild of the Mother of Jesus membership will open their 2014-2015 season on OCT. 8th with Mass at 6:30pm followed by a Buffet Dinner and business meeting in the parish hall. Menu: Cavatelli & Broccoli, Sausage & Peppers, Chicken Francaise, Roasted red potatoes, green beans, salad, bread & butter, dessert and beverages. Please call Nancy Vietri (203-685-8147) with your reservation. Cut-off date is OCT. 6th. Cost is $12.00 and payment may be made via the collection basket, and mark the envelope “Guild Opening Dinner”. New members are always welcome.

The Lord’s Kitchen: Our Parish is scheduled to provide the Wednesday meal at Christ Church, Stratford on OCT 15th. Please be generous since this is our last turn to provide a meal for this year. We are one of many Stratford churches of all religious denominations united in helping others in need. The Holy Spirit is truly present when good people help out others less fortunate than themselves. Monetary donations or gift cards should be sent to our Parish Office or placed in the collection basket during Mass. Please be sure to mark the envelope LORD’S KITCHEN. Checks should be made payable to Holy Name of Jesus Church. Volunteers please contact Armand Majewski, 203-521-5915 or Toni Majewski, 203-520-5117. Thank you for your continuing support and prayers for The Lord’s Kitchen.

September 21st, 2014: 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time

TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ SEPTEMBER 21, 2014

Sunday Scripture Meditation: Isaiah 55:6-9; Philippians 1:20c-24,27a; Matthew 20:1-16a

It is critical for parents to conduct themselves in a way worthy of the gospel. The jury may be out on “trickle-down economics.” But “trickle-down parenting” works. Parents who love Jesus, who honor each other, who pray together, and who train their children in virtue will see their children flourish. “Lord, show us how to magnify our lives for the benefit of our families.”

FAITH AND YOUR FAMIILY: Faith Builders

Now that you have adjusted to the craziness of the school year – with all the homework, practices, lessons, rehearsals and meetings it brings – don’t forget to make room for silence in your household. Designate a “tech-free time” in your home every day where you turn off the TV, computer, video games, tablets and smart phones for a bit. Read, pray, meditate, daydream, rest. Give God the chance to speak, and give yourself the chance to hear Him!

Religious Education

Two weeks ago, the Religious Education Program held an Orientation class for parents, children and teachers. We are looking forward to a great year. We have an informal program for Kindergarteners and we do have a few empty spaces, so if you know anyone you think would be interested, please let them know. Our formal program is ongoing from First through Eighth Grades. Our children must be here during this time in order to make the sacraments. Two years are required before celebrating Reconciliation and the Eucharist. After Eighth Grade, Confirmation will usually be celebrated within two years. We are still accepting registrations for this year’s classes.

THE EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS ~ SEPTEMBER 14, 2014
Sunday Scripture Meditation:  Numbers 21:4b-9;  Philippians 2:6-11;  John 3:13-17
In A.D. 326, St. Helena, the mother of the Roman emperor Constantine, discovered the true cross of Jesus near the site that generations had venerated as the Mount of Crucifixion.  Upon discovering the cross, all fell to their knees and cried out, “Lord, have mercy!”  We also rejoice in the sacrifice Jesus made for us and we say, “Lord, we love you; have mercy on us.”                                   Reprinted with permission of  The Word Among Us, 2014

Reminder: In order to receive any of the Sacraments (Reconciliation, Eucharist, Confirmation) the children must attend classes for at least two years.

Volunteers are essential to our program. If you would like to help out as a Catechist, Team Teacher, Substitute Teacher, Classroom Helper, or All-Around Office Person please let me know. Along with some of our faith-filled Veteran Catechists, we will work side by side with you to insure quality on-the-job training. Please pray about this and give me a call.

SEPT. 14 for Students: (Chapter 4 – Trinity). Children’s Liturgy begins in October ~

EVANGELIZATION CORNER
The greatest demand love makes on us is that we help one another into the Kingdom of God. Sometimes love requires us to speak a painful word of truth to awaken someone blinded by sin, recognizing that we ourselves are also sinners. Let us do for one another what we would have others do for us.

Defending Our Religious Liberty #129
Numerous court cases filed by religiously affiliated non-profits around the country are yet to be adjudicated. Therefore, our efforts to protect our First Amendment right to religious freedom must continue.

Our Parish Nurses will be available next weekend to do blood pressure screenings after the 4:30pm Mass on Saturday as well as after each Mass on Sunday morning: 7:30, 9:00 & 11:00. PLEASE NOTE that after the 7:30 Mass only, the screenings will take place in the Confessional Room next to the main vestibule of the church.

FAITH AND YOUR FAMILY: Faith Builders
As you receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist as a family each week, you are fortified to live out God’s plan for your lives in the world. Add to that receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation as a family, perhaps making it a monthly tradition. As you receive God’s merciful forgiveness through the sacrament, you are fortified to forgive one another. We cannot give what we do not have – as we are forgiven, so may we forgive. Building the faith of your family begins and is sustained in the sacraments.
